yeah he (Van Sant) really snapped his big gay whip when he made that movie about Columbine and had to include a totally irrelevant scene of the two shooter kids in the shower before they headed out for the kill.
His first movie was "Mala Noche" which (while being a pretty good movie) was about being gay and obsessed with mexican boys. So, yeah. Very gay.
Also, the star of Mala Noche looked ridiculously like River Phoenix, so it was obvious that he was just waiting to afford him.
Still think Gerry was one of the best films from the USA in years.

I haven't seen that many of his movies -- a couple I loved, a couple I hated...
I lost interest in seeing Gerry after a friend of mine acted the movie out on a table at Diner using salt & pepper shakers. Even with the S&P it was very, very slow.

I didn't know Van Sant was gay either! But now that i think about it - yes, it DOES make sense. I think Elephant stomped over Gerry as movie of that year tho. No one agrees with me. But that movie I swear is the only movie i ever watched in Manhattan where half of the audience walked out 20 minutes before the end and the other half that stayed - sat SILENT through the credits.

Coincidentally, I have Elephant on the way from Netflix. And now that I know there is a shower scene between two high school boys who shoot up the school, I'm convinced this movie is about me.
I liked Gerry. But I think being played by S&P shakers might be better. I like your friends choice in casting.

i dunno, i didn't really like Elephant all that much, i think i was really put off by the gay bit, it was so unnecessary. i think i spelled that wrong. but i loved Gerry, it is very slow but sooooo creepy.
well, ill take unnecessary gay bits over slow & creepy any day. especially if the former is about mike toole. elephant just got added to my netflix queue.
i do remember however, that one kid getting shot, and then that other kid getting shot. wow. that was a doozy. and then the end scene where the woman gives birth to the devil? insane. nothing says gay more than that.
and don't forget the giant rainbows embroidered with care on the shooters' vests. if that doesn't say GAY GAY GAY i don't know what does!
